How Can Parents Help?

Sending a student off to college is an experience filled with many emotions! Parents may contact our office for general information on available services. We will be happy to discuss our services with parents, provide tips on how to encourage your student to consider Counseling Services, and how a student can access care.

However, we cannot schedule appointments for students by third parties.  Counseling is a personal decision and students must decide when it feels right to seek care.  Our office will not disclose information to confirm or deny if a student is or has been under our care.

Please note: A signed FERPA agreement does not include counseling services and records.  Read more about The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act HERE.

Additionally, HIPAA forms that have been signed for parents to access medical information from Student Health Services do not apply for access to confidential information for The Office of Counseling Services.  Our departments are separate.

Don’t be afraid to start a conversation with your student about wellbeing. For more tools and scripts to improve communication with your college student, please visit the College Parents Matter website here.
