Entrepreneurship Curriculum & Research

Students learn to test a business idea, write the plan and fund it, then pitch it for real start-up money in the Business Plan and Elevator Pitch competitions.

The B.S.B.A. in Entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurship major is built for students who want to start or buy a business, join a family-owned business, or work for a company that runs on an entrepreneurial mindset. Graduates leave able to:

  • Identify a sound business opportunity
  • Conduct a feasibility analysis
  • Develop and write a business plan
  • Build resource management plans

Students also complete the full business core, including accounting, economics, finance, marketing and management.

Required Entrepreneurship Courses

  • ENT 2900 Ideation and Creativity: generating, screening and shaping venture ideas
  • ENT 3023 Business Modeling and Feasibility: building a business model and testing whether it can work
  • ENT 3050 Business Law for Entrepreneurs: legal structures, contracts and intellectual property for new ventures
  • ENT 3400 Venture Funding: how start-ups raise capital and what investors look for
  • ENT 4990 Strategic Entrepreneurship Management: the capstone on launching and growing a venture

Students add at least four credits from Family Business Management, Pitching Startup Ideas, Corporate Entrepreneurship and Family Business, Social Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Innovation Management, Dilemmas and Debates in Entrepreneurship or an independent study, plus one global business course such as Global Luxury Management or Marketing in Spain.

  • ACC 2010 Financial Accounting: recording and reporting business transactions
  • ACC 2020 Managerial Accounting: using cost data for planning and decisions
  • BUA 1050 Practical Excel for Business: spreadsheet skills for business analysis
  • BUA 2000 Business Career Boot Camp: career preparation for business majors
  • BUA 2990 Business Communications and Professional Development: business writing and presentations
  • ECO 2030 Principles of Macroeconomics: national output, inflation and economic policy
  • ECO 2050 Principles of Microeconomics: markets, pricing and how firms behave
  • FIN 3010 Financial Management: valuation, capital budgeting and financing decisions
  • MGT 2220 Principles of Management and Organizational Behavior: how people and teams work inside organizations
  • MGT 3280 Operations and Supply Chain Management: managing production and supply chains
  • MKT 2110 Principles of Marketing and Personal Selling: marketing fundamentals and the personal selling process
  • MTH 1310 or MTH 1410 Applied Mathematical Concepts for Business or Calculus I: quantitative reasoning
  • STS 2610 or STS 2910 Business Statistics and Analysis or Introduction to Statistical Analysis: statistics for business decisions

Pitch Competitions and Funding

  • The HPU Business Plan Competition, supported by Truist, awarded $30,000 in start-up funds in its 16th year
  • The Elevator Pitch Competition, held each November during Global Entrepreneurship Week, awards up to $20,000
  • The Pagon Family Promising Entrepreneur Fund makes grants of $500 to $1,500 to student start-ups
  • Student Entrepreneur Showcases
  • The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization national conference

In 2026, Parkevo, an AI parking venture, won $12,000 at the Business Plan Competition and went on to finalist status in a national AI venture challenge at Texas A&M.

The Belk Entrepreneurship Center

The High Point University Belk Entrepreneurship Center supports student ventures with mentors, workshops and a co-working idea incubator space. Students practice pitches, develop prototypes and work on projects for local businesses.
