Faculty in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences actively mentor students in research across biology, biochemistry, chemistry, neuroscience, and physics, creating opportunities to explore diverse scientific questions through collaborative, interdisciplinary work. Students work side-by-side with faculty to design experiments, analyze data, and communicate findings, developing essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific communication. Research experiences also foster independence, perseverance, and adaptability. These skills prepare students for long-term success in graduate study, professional programs, and scientific careers.

Summer Research Program in the Sciences (SuRPS)
SuRPS provides students with the opportunity to engage in full-time, faculty-mentored research during the months of June and July. Open exclusively to HPU natural sciences majors, this program encourages participation as early as summer after the first year, making research accessible and central to the undergraduate experience. Participants work closely with faculty to investigate meaningful scientific questions while building community, engaging in science outreach, and learning from visiting researchers who are leaders in their fields.

Participants receive housing, a meal plan, and a stipend for this 8-week program. A call for 2027 applications will be announced in January 2027 with a list of the available faculty research projects. Check out some of our summer 2026 projects!

Cutting Edge Instrumentation
Innovation in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences begins with early, authentic engagement in the practice of science through hands-on access to advanced, research-grade instrumentation typically reserved for graduate study. From tools such as a nuclear magnetic resonance instrument and scanning electron microscope to specialized equipment in molecular biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience, students gain direct experience using the technologies that drive modern discovery.

Training emphasizes safety, responsible use and technical proficiency, allowing students to develop independence and confidence as they progress. By integrating instrumentation into coursework and research, students gain essential skills for success in graduate school, professional programs, and scientific careers.
